iFixit tears down the new 2013 Xbox 360 E Model

Finds surprisingly familiar insides to the older Xbox 360 Slim

The new X360 model revealed at E3, matches the look of XB1 case-styling and is smaller and quieter, but it has the same cooling and processor as current older 360 Slim models, but it is now HDMI only!

The new Xbox 360 model matches the XB1 in more then one way, the fact it now has no old AV connector, its all all HDMI or plain composite, no component video, or digital audio, with less usb ports, and they were able to make it 'smaller' as it back to have a 'power brick' outside yet again, like the old Phat 360.

Quote:

Microsoft did a little bit of housekeeping with the backside of the Xbox 360 E, yielding a neater port layout that does away with the old A/V and S/PDIF ports in favor of a single composite out jack.

Apparently having five USB ports was excessive, so now you only get four. The E has two ports in the front to match the two seen here, dropping one of the rear USB ports found in the S.
The designer and model of the DVD drives remains unchanged, Microsoft is still using the Lite-On DG-16D5S, so that means current drive hacks MAY BE ABLE TO WORK (needs more info) to allow 'backup' games to work might still be possible on the new Xbox 360 E.

And basically below, you can see the motherboard is similar in design to the Xbox 360 Slim, so maybe even newer RGH hacks might be possible on this new Xbox 360 E design.

Overall, not much changed from the S to E models, just no AV connector, less USB ports, and external power supply, and not sure how they claim it is quieter as the cooling system is the same, maybe lower fan speed, due to no need to cool the power supply?

Creators say next-gen version is planned as soon as PS4 and XB1 is available

Extreme Gamer is neat device that allows you to load up to 10 original discs, and access them via a menu on your console, and somehow the game data streams to your system via the USB and Ethernet port

A strange and weird device appeared at this week's E3 show, and it is 'Extreme Gamer', an 10 disc-changer for Xbox 360, PS3, Wii and the creators claim their device is 'legit', which we are finding strange as currently the model they demoed was for the PS3, and how do they get their 'copyright protected special software' onto the PS3 to allow streaming of selected 'game data disc' via the USB and Ethernet ports, all current knowledge points to they would have to be using an 'custom firmware', unless they found a new way to 'legit' hack into the brains of the PS3, this will be one device for sure to stay tuned to for more info, to see how they are doing their magic.

Quote:

The Extreme Gamer® is a multi-disc device that allows the consumer to load ten video games at a time into our console.

Time Warner Cable Streams Live TV to Xbox 360

But You Still Required To Rent At Least One Separate Set-Top

You can now access 300 Live TV channels on your Xbox 360, as long as you renting at least one set-top box from Time Warner, and you of course are an Xbox Live Gold member!

After years of fighting to settle on a deal, it is done, TW Cable is now available on your Xbox 360, all 300 Channels Live, as long as you are renting at least one set-top box from TW, and you of course are paying monthly for your Xbox 360 Live Gold membership.

No deal in place yet for Xbox One, this deal is for the original 360 console. Both TWC and Microsoft are calling the deal a 'breakthrough' in the way you will be watching TV from now on in your living room, and its another step in making your Xbox the #1 source of all entertainment for your whole family in the living room.

Quote:

After more than two years of negotiations and development work, Time Warner Cable announced a pact with Microsoft to offer the TWC TV app on the Xbox 360 videogame system, providing upward of 300 live channels. The feature will be available later this summer.

However, Time Warner Cable requires all digital video subscribers to lease at least one set-top or DVR to receive the service. Another catch: TWC video subscribers must subscribe to Xbox Live Gold, which costs $60 per year, to get access to the cable programming. The cable operator will not charge an additional fee for access on Xbox.

In addition, Time Warner Cable and Microsoft currently don't have an agreement to bring cable TV programming to Xbox One, the next-generation console, skedded to ship this November. "We're eager to work with Microsoft on Xbox One and build on our momentum," a TWC rep said.

Other U.S. pay TV partners that provide content through Xbox 360 include Comcast Xfinity, which offers VOD titles on the console, and Verizon FiOS, which offers a subset of subscribers' live TV lineups.

Both TWC and Microsoft touted the deal as a breakthrough that provides a new option for watching cable TV.

"We are thrilled to partner with Microsoft in expanding the many ways our customers already connect to the content they love through TWC TV," Mike Angus, senior VP and general manager of video for Time Warner Cable, said in a prepared statement.

Microsoft positioned the deal as boosting Xbox 360's appeal as a general-purpose source of entertainment in the living room.

"TWC TV is a significant addition to Xbox 360, bringing our customers their favorite entertainment in one place - enhanced TV experience, games, movies, music, sports and entertainment apps," said Blair Westlake, corporate vice president of Microsoft's Media & Entertainment Group.

Say goodbye to your Xbox 360 friends?

Major Nelson has confirmed 'inter-system' chat is not possible!

While your friends list will transfer over to the Xbox One when you upgrade to the new console, that doesn’t mean that you will be able to chat to your buddies who are still using the Xbox 360

One of the launch features on the Xbox One is you can import your 'Friends List' from Xbox Live 360 era, but sadly it seems you might not be able to 'chat' with your old friends unless they also upgrade to the new Xbox One platform, as the new system uses 'Skype' for all game chats, and the old Xbox 360 system is not compatible, all tho maybe the engineers will figure out a bandaid way in the future, for now its 'Goodbye' to your old buddies unless they also jump ship with you over to the Microsoft's all-in-one next-gen cloud-powered Skype-Enabled Xbox One console!

Quote:

Major Nelson has confirmed on Reddit that communication between the two systems may be an issue because they use very different communication models. While the Xbox 360 has a chat system, the new console will be using Skype. Major Nelson confirmed, saying:

"Exactly. I need to talk to the engineers, but for the reasons mentioned above it will be challenging."

Xbox game update policies 'totally unacceptable for free-to-play'

World of Tanks studio working with Microsoft to deliver more frequent game updates

Microsoft's quality control tests on game updates are 'totally unacceptable for meaningful free-to-play', the chief executive of Wargaming has said.

Even tho Microsoft has dropped the $40,000 charge per patch they used to charge developers to update their games, World of Tanks developer has spoken out saying the issue of 'time it takes for Microsoft to approve' a patch is the biggest issue now, as they feel games that are Free-To-Play need fast ways to update and change, and not be locked in lengthy process of getting an patch released.

Quote:

Victor Kislyi explained to Polygon that frequent updates are a crucial part of any free-to-play business.

"The good thing is with online games, sometimes if you screw up, you can do frequent updates," Kislyi said.

"But one of the biggest challenges with Microsoft was the frequency of updates because the QA process and certification process take an extremely long time. Totally unacceptable for a meaningful free-to-play. We are working with them to do quicker updates."

Microsoft conventionally tests games and updates thoroughly in order to uphold a level of quality across its Xbox platform. When developers deliver game updates to Microsoft, they must wait as the Xbox quality assurance team tests the content for errors, glitches or unwanted content.

However, according to Kislyi, the friction of the game update process remains an issue. He said he was unsure whether Microsoft will enact platform-wide policy reform in order to remedy the issue.

"We will see, there is a lot of work on the technically side and on the administrative side which should resolve in the acceptable quality of the product, including updates of the product including speed and rates. So we will see," he said.

Platforms such as iOS and Valve's Steam allow developers to issue updates frequently - in some cases in a matter of days, on some occasions sooner. This has allowed game studios to use the latest player data as a guide for what to add to and remove from the game.
But even with this problem still, they are moving forward with their plans to release an Xbox 360 edition of World of Tanks within a few months as previously announced the E3 conference last month.

The Monopoly wants you to OWN the World's Top Brands

A new version of Monopoly will let players traverse a new boardwalk as an Xbox controller, according to Hasbro's Monopoly Empire website.

There is new Monopoly board-game on the market, and this one is changed so you fight for control over the top American brand-names, like Microsoft, EA, Xbox, Coke-Cola, McDonald's, etc. and the board pieces (tokens) have been changed to familiar icons in America, like the Xbox Controller, or Large Fries from McDonald's, or the original Classic Glass Coke Bottle (Hey, we still use those here in DR!) :)

Quote:

The goal of Monopoly Empire is for players to "own the world's top brands," among them Electronic Arts. In the twist on the classic board game, players bid for the brands and build bustling towers of business. It's available on websites like Target ($24.99) and Toys R Us ($19.99).

"With the Monopoly Empire game, you can own some of the biggest brands in the world," the game's description reads. "Every space on the board is an iconic brand, including Xbox, Coca-Cola, McDonald's and Samsung! Splash your Monopoly cash to build your Empire tower as high as it can go. You'll need to make tough decisions and smart moves to take down the competition and be the first to reach the top. Hit the big time and own the world's top brands with the Monopoly Empire game!"

The CronusMAX is Here !

Team-Xecuter has greatly improved the Cronus device with a bunch of mod packs!

TX got a bunch of the Cronus-X devices from a retailer and have reprogrammed them with their own custom firmware to make them MUCH more powerful than the standard (and more expensive) retail version!

Team-Xecuter has return from a break in releasing new devices, and with some great news, they have reprogrammed the retail Cronus-X devices with an custom firmware and are offering up a ton of modpacks for it, making it now the CronusMAX and it will be available alot cheaper then retail version, and offers alot more features, here is the details on how it all works for both X360 and PS3:

Quote:

Cross-over Gaming

The CronusMAX is the first ever cross-compatibility gaming add-on ever created for video game industry. Simply put, it allows you to use your favorite gaming controller on virtually any console you want. Love your Xbox 360 controller but have to use Playstation 3 at your buddy's house? Not a problem. Just plug in the CronusMAX, sync your controller, and you are ready to go. No setup. No hassle. Just play!

Our unique device opens up a whole new world of gaming for you. Gone are the days when you are restricted to using uncomfortable controllers because of the system you are playing on.

Features include:

  • Works on Xbox 360, Playstation 3, and any Windows-based PC
  • You can even use a Wii controller on your Xbox 360 or PS3.
  • Lag-free. Instant response every time
  • No installation necessary. Simply plug-and-play.

Precision Mouse & Keyboard Control

There are many "mouse and keyboard" console adapters on the market today, so, what makes CronusMAX so different? The answer is simple: precision. Making a high precision device (like a mouse) work well in a game that was designed for controller thumbsticks is a very hard problem. All console shooters have different levels of "aim-assist" that makes them playable using a controller. If done incorrectly, adapting a mouse to these games will result in aiming that feels jerky, unresponsive, and detached. CronusMAX takes this mouse tracking information to the next level using it's unique "MAXaim" technology.

Through MAXaim, CronusMAX is able to provide unparalleled mouse precision unachievable by any other gaming adapter available. The problem is simple: when the mouse moves, equivalent reticle movement on the screen should occur (i.e. 1-to-1 movement). This is the obvious result that all PC-gamers expect. But, before the creation of MAXaim was not possible on consoles. Every console shooter has its own unique aiming system that governs how the game controls and feels to the gamer. Every game is different as they all have different stick dead-zones and geometries, variable sensitivity and acceleration regions, asymmetric sensitivity, non-linear movement, and more. Be cautious of any console mouse adapter that claims "PC-feel" without talking about how it solves all these challenges.

CronusMAX's simplicity and flexibility is also second-to-none. It's philosophy is to empower the gamer without bombarding them with unneeded complexity. It's quick and easy to set up your preferred gaming environment. Even more, it will actually give you real-time feedback to help you find your optimal settings. For the most hard core gamer, CronusMAX offers an insane amount of capabilities, without any kind of soldering or extra hardware to install to the controller - it's the first truly ultimate all-in-one wireless controller modding device.

CronusMAX enables a gamer to choose input devices that suits them best whether at a desk or on a couch in the living room. Mix and match different devices for your optimal playing style.

Features Include:

  • Next-generation console input adapter
  • Game on your Xbox 360 or Playstation 3 using your favorite PC gaming-grade hardware
  • Supports both desktop and living room gaming styles
  • Unsurpassed in-game 1-to-1 feel thanks to advanced MAXaim technology
  • Simple configuration
  • Real-time feedback to guide you to your optimal settings
  • Bonus Feature: Ability to remap PC grade Joypads and gamepads !
  • Note: A Windows-PC is required while using the keyboard & mouse together

Fully Modded Controller

The CronusMAX really is the ultimate solution to all of your controller modding needs. It allows you to implement powerful mod capabilities to your controller WITHOUT the need to add additional chips or wires to the hardware. This means it will work with your controller RIGHT NOW giving you a fully modded controller with no installation necessary. There is absolutely no need to make changes or modifications to your Xbox 360 or Playstation 3 controller - this has never been done before. This innovative new technology isn't available anywhere else on the market. With a full selection of mods at your fingertips, CronusMAX is perfect for the gamer looking to add an extra edge to their game.

Features include:

  • Wireless state of the art modification technology
  • Millions of mod configurations - No Combo Limit !
  • No lag time (tested to 1.2 milliseconds)
  • No chips, wires, or other hardware installation required
  • No soldering or opening the controller - Plug and Play !
  • Fully loaded with ALL major mod packs
  • Support for all console games (i.e. COD series, Battlefield Series, Mortal Kombat, Madden, FIFA, GTA, Tiger Woods and many more!)
  • Stores memory for up to 9 of your favorite games. Button on the CronusMAX allows you to switch between game slots
  • 100% undetectable online
  • Custom software for mapping the controllers buttons
  • Complete button layout configuration
  • User friendly menu system using controller LEDs
  • Works with both Xbox 360 and PS3
  • Does NOT void controller warranty
  • Bluetooth dongle required (Sold Separately)

The CronusMAX has 12 different mod class with up to 53 selectable mods allowing for millions of mod combinations giving you a fully modded controller with no installation necessary. You can choose and combine one mod from each class for a total of 12 active mods at the SAME TIME. This means you can make combinations such a burst fire added to rapidfire resulting in an exclusive "automatic burstfire" mode. This mode can be optimized by adjusting the number of bullets fired per burst as well as the time between bursts. For additional optimization, you can add the "scope enable" mod which will allow your "automatic burstfire" to be activated only when the ADS scope is in use.

CronusMAX also allows you to use your controller on Xbox 360, Playstation 3, and PC. When you purchase CronusX it's like having two devices in one!

PLEASE NOTE: These are only examples. You do NOT have to use the combinations in this manner. You can experiment and use whatever combinations suit your playing style best. The possibilities are endless. And with the exclusive "press sensitivity" feature, you can assign two different mods to one single button!

PLEASE NOTE: If you would like to use your Xbox 360 controller wirelessly on your PS3 you will need to purchase the Microsoft Wireless Receiver. Without it, you can only use a wired Xbox 360 controller with the PS3. An Xbox 360 wired controller is also required for the initial setup on an Xbox 360. Also, due to how the CronusMAX communicates with the controller, the headset port is used so you will not be able to use headsets that plug into the controller itself. So, any headset that can connect directly to the console either wired or wireless can work as long as it does not plug in to the CronusMAX, or controller being supported by the CronusMAX at that current time.

Odamex 0.6.4 released

$

Thanks to 'hyper-eye'

Odamex is a modification of DOOM to allow players to compete with each other over the Internet using the client/server architecture. Odamex also provides a feature-rich single-player engine

Quote:

Just in time to power the 20th Anniversary Doom Tournament at QuakeCon 2013, I am happy to announce Odamex 0.6.4.

Of particular note are further improvements to widescreen support which was introduced in the previous release and uncapped framerate.

Enjoy!

Changes:

  • Added vid_maxfps CVAR to allow frame rates greater than 35. Users can cap to an arbitrary frame rate or have completely uncapped frame rates. Interpolation between game logic states is used for frame rates other than 35.
  • Removed r_widescreen CVAR.
  • Added vid_widescreen CVAR (default = 0) to indicate the user prefers a wide field-of-view.
  • Pillar boxing is used in place of horizontal stretching.
  • Letter boxing is used in 4:3 video modes with wide field-of-view.

Improvements:

  • Fix the frame rate decrease that occurs when a player is looking directly at a very close wall and they are using a screen width that is a power-of-two (512, 1024, 2048, etc.).
  • Fix obituaries for rocket deaths. The obituary for splash damage was swapped with the obituary for direct hits.

New Features:

  • Add support for ZDoom in Doom format horizon lines (special #337).
  • Add support for the ZDoom DeHackEd weapon extensions "Ammo use" and "Min ammo" and "Ammo per shot" from Eternity.

Bug Fixes:

  • Change the ammo usage per shot for railguns to match "Ammo use" and change weapons if the railgun does not have "Min ammo". Note that if the DeHackEd patch that implements the railgun does not otherwise specify, the railgun will use the amount of ammo per shot as the weapon it replaces.
  • Fix a bug that sent all team chat messages to spectators on the same team.
  • Change the default color of team chat messages from green to orange.
  • Fix freezes with maps requiring large numbers of TID, such as dvii-1u.wad MAP19.
  • Fix a bug that would use the past position of the wrong player when performing reconciliation with sv_unlag under certain circumstances. This could be seen by flags dropping at the location of players besides the flag carrier in CTF.

Updated to support Corona and fix USB issues

A new version of the popular Nintendo 64 emulator for Xbox 360 has been released adding support for Corona

New beta 2 of Mupen64-360 v0.993 emu for "hacked" Xbox 360. The main novelty here is the fix for some USB problems and Corona video support (Which was introduced in beta 1).

Here is the full changelog:

Quote:

* Mupen64-360 v0.993 Beta2 *

http://www.libxenon.org/

Description

Mupen64-360 is a Nintendo64 emulator for the Xbox 360, it’s powered by libxenon and it’s a port of Wii64 (which itself was a port of Mupen64).

Usage

Unzip on USB sick, then run from Xell.

Many ROM formats are supported, zipped ROMs also work.

In the browser, the Back button changes the current drive, A selects, B goes to parent dir. Ingame, Back toggles Framerate limiting, and the Guide button quits to the browser.

Other controls are described in the emulator itself.

The browser background image is loaded from /mupen64-360/bg.png on the USB stick, other backgrounds are provided.

Options

  • Controls (l->r):

Changes the way N64 directional controls are mapped to the 360 gamepad, from left to right. EG: Stick / D-Pad / C-buttons means N64 stick will be mapped on the 360 left stick, N64 D-pad on 360 D-pad, and N64 C-buttons on 360 right D-pad.

  • Textures:

Changes the texture enhancement filter, depending on games, some filters will look better than others. Be aware than the highest settings can slowdown games a lot, or even crash them in some rare cases.

  • CPU core:

Controls the speed/compatibility ratio, from fully featured dynarec to interpreter mode. ‘No linking’ and ‘No VM’ are new dynarec modes that can make some games work, while still running at playable speed.

  • Framerate limiting:

When enabled, games won’t go faster than they would on a real N64. Can be toggled ingame with the Back button.

History

v0.993 BETA2:

  • Fixes mount issues with USB devices (which caused nothing to work) My Bad! //Swizzy

v0.993 BETA: Recompilation with some ZLX and Libxenon fixes

  • Supports Corona Video Output
  • Better USB Drive/HDD Compatibility

v0.992 Beta: Almost a complete rewrite, notable changes:

  • Moved to Mupen64 Plus core.
  • Moved to Rice video plugin.
  • Dynarec overhaul.
  • Faster and way more compatible.
  • More control over the speed/compatibility ratio (see ‘CPU core’ option)
  • More texture enhancement filters.
  • Basic controls remapping.
  • GUI improvements.
  • Built with recent libxenon/ZLX (more supported filesystems, less bugs, …)
  • /! Use the Guide button to quit a game, Back toggles framerate limiting now.

Xbox 360 support to continue until 2016

Including '100 new games', according to Microsoft.

Microsoft has announced that it will support the Xbox 360 for three more years before phasing it out in 2016...

That, according to Xbox chief marketing and strategy officer Yusuf Mehdi, who added that you could expect to see over 100 new games before that time comes.

Quote:

"If you look at 360, that platform lasted for seven to eight years, and it's going to go for another three years. It's incredibly profitable now in the tail," Mehdi said.

"We're going to continue to invest in Xbox 360, and the two devices can work in concert. So it's not like the day we ship Xbox One your 360 won't work. We'll continue to support it. In fact, we're going to ship over 100 new games on Xbox 360. So you'll still be able to play your games, just not on the same exact box."

So, if true, that will set the console at a 11-year life cycle. Mehdi also mentioned that the Xbox One will be aimed to sell at "break even or low margin at worst"...

Quote:

Microsoft is looking to make money from games that it will sell, including its Xbox Live service.

"And as we can cost reduce our box as we've done with 360, we'll do that to continue to price reduce and get even more competitive with our offering."
The Xbox One will launch in 13 markets on November 22.
